Receiving NOAA with QFH

This is a photo blog of my experiments with receiving the NOAA satellites. These broadcast the meteo image to the ground as they fly around the planet, it’s kinda silly, like a giant scanner that captures the whole continent and sends it back row by row. There is no encryption and no integrity codes, you just tune your receiver to AM, use the right software, frequency tracker and hope for the best.

There is a fun thing with doppler effect here, the effective frequency changes as the satellite flies closer and further from you.

It was impossible to properly receive these signals on my balcony due to QRM - not sure from what. That is the wavy lines in the pictures. It worked fine when I brought it on a hill.

The blue dipole was claimed to have similar reception to the full QFH antenna, which I was not able to confirm. Nothing beats the QFH. It just sucks that it is so large.
